Head of Bioprocessing 
Ir. Karolien MAES holds a master’s degree in bioengineering sciences (Ghent University, 2017) with a major in chemistry and bioprocess technology. She is experienced with development and upscaling of fermentative production and downstream purification of new-to-nature biosurfactants from lab scale up to 15 m³ processes. She joined the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant initially as a process engineer after performing a Master dissertation there about the development of continuous fermentation. Currently Karolien works as a Team Leader Bioprocessing at the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, leading several EU and bilateral projects dealing with biomass pretreatment, fermentation, biocatalysis and downstream processing.
